Chapter Ten
âWhat do you mean the roomâs empty?â Colin asked. Those last three words echoed in Melissaâs head as all the air was sucked out of the room in a whoosh.
News like that couldnât be good. Tommy was stable last night. Heâd been moved to a recovery area.
Melissa centered herself by gripping the edge of the table.
âHas the patient been moved?â he asked, and then she heard him give Tommyâs name.
The silence sent cold chills down Melissaâs spine.
âCan you check at the nurseâs stand?â he asked, his gaze intensely focused on a spot on the floor. âYes, Iâll hold.â
Melissa moved next to Colin and then he tilted the earpiece so that she could hear.
âThe patient was moved. Iâm not authorized to give his room number but youâll be happy to know that your package arrived safely and all is well. We paged Mr. OâBrien and he confirmed receipt,â she said with a self-satisfied tone.
âThanks, Renee. It means a lot to have that confirmed,â he said, and Melissa could hear the relief in his voice.
âYou betcha. Anything else I can help with tonight?â she chirped.
âThatâs it for tonight,â he said before wishing her a good evening and ending the call.
A flash of light was followed by a brilliant thunderclap that felt like it was directly on top of them.
Melissa flinched at the same time she gasped.
Colin looked at her and his gaze sent goose bumps up her armsâgoose bumps that were totally inappropriate under the circumstances. Then again, so was that kiss, and she couldnât stop thinking about it.
âItâs late and you should probably try to get some rest,â he said.
Melissa released a deep breath. Relief was quickly replaced by anger. Richard had put her in this position in the first place. Heâd tortured her for twelve long months. It was time to make it stop. She turned to face Colin. There wasnât more than a foot between them and she could see his pulse pound at the base of his throat no matter how calm his facade remained.
âWhat are we going to do to find that jerk?â she asked.
âWeâre not.â Colinâs shoulders were tense, belying his casual words.
âI know what you said about staying hidden until they catch him, but how long is that going to take?â she asked. âHow much longer do I have to wait?â
âGood question,â he said. âOne I donât have an answer to.â
âWe canât just stay here and hide. Heâll find us eventually,â she said, hoping she was getting through.
âYouâre frustrated and I get that, but we have another priority right now.â He stared at the bassinet. âI want to go after the guy more thanââ
She shot him a look that said, âImpossible.â
He put up a hand. âOkay, as much as you do. But we made the decision to keep Angelina with us and as long as sheâs here, we canât risk a direct approach.â
Colin was making perfect sense and yet she wasnât ready to concede. Her body was chorded with tension and thereâd be no break until Richard was behind bars.
