Chapter Ten

“What do you mean the room’s empty?” Colin asked. Those last three words echoed in Melissa’s head as all the air was sucked out of the room in a whoosh.

News like that couldn’t be good. Tommy was stable last night. He’d been moved to a recovery area.

Melissa centered herself by gripping the edge of the table.

“Has the patient been moved?” he asked, and then she heard him give Tommy’s name.

The silence sent cold chills down Melissa’s spine.

“Can you check at the nurse’s stand?” he asked, his gaze intensely focused on a spot on the floor. “Yes, I’ll hold.”

Melissa moved next to Colin and then he tilted the earpiece so that she could hear.

“The patient was moved. I’m not authorized to give his room number but you’ll be happy to know that your package arrived safely and all is well. We paged Mr. O’Brien and he confirmed receipt,” she said with a self-satisfied tone.

“Thanks, Renee. It means a lot to have that confirmed,” he said, and Melissa could hear the relief in his voice.

“You betcha. Anything else I can help with tonight?” she chirped.

“That’s it for tonight,” he said before wishing her a good evening and ending the call.

A flash of light was followed by a brilliant thunderclap that felt like it was directly on top of them.

Melissa flinched at the same time she gasped.

Colin looked at her and his gaze sent goose bumps up her arms—goose bumps that were totally inappropriate under the circumstances. Then again, so was that kiss, and she couldn’t stop thinking about it.

“It’s late and you should probably try to get some rest,” he said.

Melissa released a deep breath. Relief was quickly replaced by anger. Richard had put her in this position in the first place. He’d tortured her for twelve long months. It was time to make it stop. She turned to face Colin. There wasn’t more than a foot between them and she could see his pulse pound at the base of his throat no matter how calm his facade remained.

“What are we going to do to find that jerk?” she asked.

“We’re not.” Colin’s shoulders were tense, belying his casual words.

“I know what you said about staying hidden until they catch him, but how long is that going to take?” she asked. “How much longer do I have to wait?”

“Good question,” he said. “One I don’t have an answer to.”

“We can’t just stay here and hide. He’ll find us eventually,” she said, hoping she was getting through.

“You’re frustrated and I get that, but we have another priority right now.” He stared at the bassinet. “I want to go after the guy more than—”

She shot him a look that said, “Impossible.”

He put up a hand. “Okay, as much as you do. But we made the decision to keep Angelina with us and as long as she’s here, we can’t risk a direct approach.”

Colin was making perfect sense and yet she wasn’t ready to concede. Her body was chorded with tension and there’d be no break until Richard was behind bars.
